Introduction to Tokamachi
Located in the southern region of Niigata Prefecture, Tokamachi City has a unique and scenic natural landscape. The Shinano River, Japan’s largest river, flows through the centre of the Tokamachi basin, which over time has shaped grand river terraces on either side of the city. Not only is Tokamachi home to one of Japan’s Top 3 Natural Gorges: the Kiyotsu Gorge; and one of Japan’s Top 3 Medicinal Onsen: Matsunoyama Onsen, the city is also situated in the heart of a heavy snowfall region. In the winter, the snowfall accumulates to heights of two to three meters; The Tokamachi Snow Festival is a spectacular celebration of this heavy snowfall. In the warmer seasons, the Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale turns the whole region into a canvas for contemporary art. These events and many more are much loved by both locals and visitors alike.
Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale
The Echigo Tsumari Art Triennale is one of the largest international art festivals in the world. It happens here, once every three years, in Tokamachi City and Tsunan Town: an area well known throughout Japan for its winters of heavy snowfall.
Tokamachi's Local Cuisine
When the snow melts, its crystal clear melt water nurtures the region’s most delicious produce including Minami-uonuma Koshihikari brand rice, local sake, Tsumari Pork, and more. Moreover, Tokamachi’s “funori soba” soba noodles which use funori, a type of seaweed traditionally used as a binding agent in Tokamachi’s textile industry, are a creation only conceivable in a town of textile production like Tokamachi.
Seasonal Change in Tokamachi
Not only does the heavy snowfall give life to a wonderful winter’s snowscape, but it also has a lasting influence that extends into all four seasons, creating a climate and culture found only in Tokamachi. Both locals and visitors are drawn to the natural and therapeutic beauty of Tokamachi’s seasonal change.
Among the onsen “hot spring” baths found in Matsunoyama are open-air “moonview baths”, which give you the chance to enjoy the serenity of your natural surroundings, while the hot spring water warms your body to its core. Matsunoyama Onsen also offers a delicious organic local cuisine created from wild plants, locally sourced vegetables, rice harvested from the Matsunoyama Hikaruma rice fields, and local sakes from the Echigo region.
